Calendar Girls

Southland Express Reported

http://www.southlandexpress.co.nz/entertainment/exciting-ensemble-for-play/

THE cast of Repertory Invercargill’s production of the charming play Calendar Girls has been revealed.

Director Angela Newell said Repertory Invercargill had assembled an “outstanding ensemble of Southland acting talent who will bring this funny and moving play to life”.

Calendar Girls, by Tim Firth and Juliette Towhidi, is based on a true story which celebrates friendship and the necessity to live life to the fullest.

When Annie’s (Lyndal Ludlow) husband John (Frank Dean) dies of leukaemia, she and best friend Chris (Julie Smith) resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar, with a little help from a hospital porter and amateur photographer. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.

The supporting cast includes Rosalie Wright, Victoria Mills, Sarah McCarthy, Buffy Edlin, Ian Edwards, Kirsty Tait, Gayle Jonker and Marc Colyer.

The community theatre production by Repertory Invercargill is being performed by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd and New Zealand Play Bureau Ltd.

As part of the play’s production, a calendar will also be produced featuring photography by Jacqui van Dam, with proceeds going to a local charity.

Calendar Girls, SIT Centrestage Theatre, Invercargill. October 25-28. Tickets on sale from TicketDirect from Monday, September 4. Please note the comedy contains partial nudity and themes more suited to a mature audience.
